Privacy Policy

Proper Kanji is operated by Keys Inc., a company registered in Japan. This page explains what happens to information when you visit this site. We have tried to write it in English rather than in legal language.

The short version

We do not ask you to create an account. We do not sell your data. The tools on this site run in your browser, which means the names and words you type into them are not sent to us or stored on our servers.

What is collected automatically

Like every website, ours records basic technical information when a page is served:

  • Your IP address
  • The page you requested and when
  • Your browser and operating system
  • The page that referred you, if any

This is used to keep the site running and to block abuse. It is not used to build a profile of you.

Who else handles your data

  • Cloudflare, Inc. — delivers this site and filters malicious traffic. Your request passes through Cloudflare's network before it reaches us, and Cloudflare records technical log data as part of that.
  • GMO Internet Group (ConoHa) — hosts the site's server, located in Japan.

Because our server is in Japan, visiting this site means your request is handled in Japan. If you are in the EU or the UK, that is a transfer outside your jurisdiction, and you should be aware of it.

Analytics

We do not currently run any third-party analytics on this site. If that changes, we will name the provider on this page before it starts collecting anything.

Cookies

This site sets cookies only where something would not work without them — for example, if you leave a comment and ask the browser to remember your name.

Affiliate links are the exception. If you click a link to an outside shop, that shop may set its own cookie to record that you arrived from here. That cookie belongs to them, not to us, and their privacy policy governs it. See our Affiliate Disclosure.

If you email us

We keep your message so we can answer it and so we have a record if the same question comes up again. We do not add you to a mailing list. If you want your message deleted, ask and we will delete it.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask what personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected, or to have it deleted. Email [email protected] and we will handle it. There is no charge and you do not need to explain why.

In practice we hold very little — usually nothing at all beyond server logs, which are kept for a short period and then discarded.

Children

This site is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that matters, we will update the date at the top and describe what changed.
