Terms of Use

By using properkanji.com you agree to what follows. If you do not, please stop using the site.

What we promise, and what we don't

We work hard to get the Japanese right. We do not guarantee it is right for your particular purpose.

Language is not arithmetic. A character that reads well in one context reads oddly in another, and reasonable Japanese speakers disagree about borderline cases. Everything on this site is offered as informed opinion, not as a certified translation.

Permanent decisions are yours

If you are getting a tattoo, engraving, or anything else you cannot undo, do not rely on this site alone. Read the explanation we give, then get a second opinion from another Japanese reader.

We are not liable for the consequences of a permanent decision made on the basis of a free web tool. We say this not to dodge responsibility but because it is the honest position — no website can carry that weight for you.

Using what the tools produce

Output generated by the tools on this site — your name in kanji, and the images of it — is yours to use, including commercially. Put it on a shirt, a sign, a tattoo, a business card. No attribution required, though it is always welcome.

What you may not do is take the site itself: scraping our character data, copying our explanations, or rebuilding our tools as your own product. The output is yours. The machinery is ours.

Our content

Articles, explanations, and designs on this site are copyright Keys Inc. unless stated otherwise. You are welcome to quote a short passage with a link back. You are not welcome to republish a page in full, translated or otherwise.

Links to other sites

We link to shops and resources we think are useful. We do not control them and are not responsible for what they do. Some of those links earn us a commission — see our Affiliate Disclosure.

Availability

This is a small operation. The site may go down, tools may change, and pages may be rewritten without notice. We do not promise uninterrupted service.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Japan. Any dispute will be handled in the courts of Tokyo.
